What to Know Before Your First Balayage Appointment
So you've been scrolling through Instagram, saving every sun-kissed, lived-in hair photo you can find, and you've finally decided — it's time. You're getting balayage.
First of all, great choice. Balayage is one of my absolute favorite services to do, and when it's done well, it can completely transform the way you feel about your hair. But before you come in, there are a few things I want you to know so your appointment goes smoothly and you walk out completely in love with your results.
What Is Balayage, Exactly?
Balayage is a French word that means "to sweep" — and that's exactly what it is. Instead of traditional foil highlights that start at the root and saturate every strand, balayage is hand-painted directly onto the hair in a sweeping motion. The result is a softer, more natural-looking color with a gradual fade from darker roots to lighter ends.
It's lower maintenance than traditional highlights, grows out beautifully, and looks different on everyone — which is part of what makes it so special.
Bring Inspiration Photos
This is honestly one of the most important things you can do before your appointment. Pull together 3–5 photos that show the kind of result you're hoping for — not just one, because each photo tells me something different. One might show the placement you love, another might show the tone, another might show the overall vibe.
The more visual reference I have, the better I can tailor your balayage to you specifically.
Be Honest About Your Hair History
I need to know everything — box dye, previous lightening, keratin treatments, anything. Your hair history directly affects how we approach your color, and there are no wrong answers. I'm not here to judge, I'm here to give you the best result possible. Hiding past services can lead to unexpected outcomes, so please be upfront and we'll figure it out together.
Understand That It May Take More Than One Session
Depending on your starting color and your goal, your dream balayage might be a journey, not a single appointment. If you're going from very dark hair to a bright, beachy blonde, that's not a one-session transformation — and any stylist who tells you otherwise isn't being honest with you.
I'd rather map out a plan that gets your hair there beautifully and healthily than rush a result that compromises your hair's integrity.
Come in With Clean, Dry Hair
Arrive with your hair clean and dry — no need to style it. Avoid heavy oils or treatments the day before, as these can affect how the lightener processes. And if you wear your hair a certain way most of the time, wear it like that to your appointment so I can see exactly how it falls naturally.
Plan for Some Time
A full balayage service takes time — typically anywhere from 2.5 to 4+ hours depending on your hair length, thickness, and the look we're going for. Plan your day accordingly. Bring a podcast, a good playlist, or just enjoy a few hours to yourself. Think of it as self-care.
Trust the Process
My job is to take everything you've told me — your inspiration, your lifestyle, your hair history, your budget — and translate it into a result that works beautifully for you. Sometimes that means a gentle nudge in a slightly different direction if I think it'll serve you better. I'll always talk you through my thinking, and I'll always have your hair's health at the center of every decision.
Balayage is one of those services that, when it's done right, makes you feel like the most effortless version of yourself. I can't wait to create that for you. xo jen
