Real Talk: The Most Common Hair Concerns I Hear Behind the Chair
When clients sit down in my chair, they always have questions. And honestly? I love it. It means they’re paying attention to their hair and they want to understand it better. Over the years, I’ve noticed the same three concerns come up again and again. So today I’m sharing the real answers — and the products I actually use and trust.
1. “My highlights are frying my hair. What do I do?”
This is the most common thing I hear from my blonde clients, and it makes total sense. Lightening your hair — whether you’re going for highlights, balayage, or a full blonde — removes protein from the hair strand. Over time, that leads to breakage, dullness, and that rough, straw-like texture nobody wants. The fix isn’t complicated, but it does require consistency.
My go-to recommendation is the O&M Power Base Protein Treatment. It rebuilds what the bleaching process takes away, strengthening the strand and restoring that smooth, healthy feel. I use it on my highlighted clients regularly and the difference is genuinely noticeable — hair feels stronger, sits better, and holds a style longer.
If your highlighted hair is showing breakage or feels weak and thin, this is where I’d start.
2. “Why is my hair so frizzy — and what actually helps?”
Frizz is one of those things that can feel impossible to control, especially if you live somewhere humid or if your hair is naturally on the drier side. The truth is, frizz usually comes down to a lack of moisture, and the solution is building a routine that keeps hydration in and humidity out.
For my frizz-prone clients, I always turn to Innersense. Their Color Radiance Hairbath and Color Radiance Conditioner are gentle enough for color-treated hair but moisturizing enough to make a real difference. I also love their Hydration Mask — use it once a week as an intensive treatment and you will feel the change. For styling, their smoothing cream is my top pick. It works whether you’re air drying or blow drying, without that heavy or sticky feeling a lot of smoothing products leave behind.
And my secret weapon for extra shine and frizz control? I Create Shine. It’s a silicone-free glossing serum that adds mirror-like shine while sealing out frizz. A few drops on damp or dry hair is all you need.
3. “My hair is so fine — it falls flat no matter what I do.”
Fine hair has its own unique challenges. Most products that promise volume end up weighing hair down, which actually makes the problem worse. What fine hair really needs is lightweight support — products that add body without residue or heaviness.
I love the O&M Fine Intellect line for exactly this. The shampoo and conditioner are specifically formulated for fine hair and won’t leave that weighed-down feeling. But the real game changers are the Atonic Thickening Spray and Thique (spelled T-H-I-Q-U-E). Used together, they add fullness at the root that actually lasts. Spray Atonic at the roots while hair is damp, blow dry, and use Thique for touch-ups. You’ll have lift and body that holds all day.
The Bottom Line
Healthy hair doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s really about understanding what your hair needs and using the right products for your specific concern — whether that’s protein for damaged blonde hair, moisture to fight frizz, or lightweight volume for fine strands. There’s a solution that actually works.
